Managing information at California State University: "universal search" across 23 campuses

At colleges and universities, finding ways to manage information in a way that makes it useful to all constituents—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the public-at-large, is a top priority. Increasingly, institutions are turning to universal search as the best way to connect people to the information they need, wherever it may be stored. Managing information is especially challenging at California State University, the nation’s largest university system, with 23 campuses, almost 433,000 students, and 44,000 faculty members. In addition to a vast amount of ‘centralized’ information, each campus has its own public-facing website and multiple sub-domains designed to deliver information to everyone from students looking for course catalogs and parents seeking admissions information to media professionals searching for press releases. This Web seminar will focus on California State University’s use of the Google Search Appliance, an integrated hardware and software search solution specifically designed to search content within intranets and websites. Participants will learn about how search can: •Enable students to easily access relevant information, including course schedules, curriculum, prerequisites and campus activities •Increase productivity of faculty and staff by enabling instructors to easily search for research and other documents online, and allowing staff to share any administrative documents •Aggregate information through a single search box while maintaining access controls to ensure students, faculty, and staff only access information appropriate to them Presentations by: Vijay Koduri, Group Marketing Manager, Google Enterprise; Gerard Greenidge, Manager of Web Services, California State University
